Unit 3, Lesson 3(B) — 21 February

21 February is a memorable day in our national history. We observe the day every year as International Mother Language Day. The day is a national holiday. On this day, we pay tribute to the martyrs who laid down their lives to establish Bangla as a state language in undivided Pakistan in 1952. The struggle to achieve our language rights is known as the Language Movement. The seed of Language Movement was sown on 21 March 1948 when Mohammad Ali Zinnah, the then Governor General of Pakistan, declared in a public meeting in Dhaka that Urdu would be the only state language of Pakistan. The declaration raised a storm of protest all over the country. The protest continued non-stop, gathering momentum day by day. It turned into a movement and reached its climax in 1952. The government outlawed all sorts of public meetings and rallies to stop it. The students of Dhaka University defied the law and brought out a peaceful protest procession on 21 February 1952. When the procession reached near Dhaka Medical College, the police opened fire on the students, killing Salam, Rafiq, Barkat, Safiur and Jabbar. As a result, there were mass protests all over the country and the government had to declare Bangla as a state language. This kindled the sparks of independence movement of Bangladesh.

Unit 5, Lesson 4(C) — Fish Population & Global Warming

Fish population is in serious danger from global warming. Climate change is increasing the water temperature in rivers, lakes and seas. This means there is less food and oxygen available for fish. It also means the fish may not grow fully and may have fewer fish fries. Some fishes will become extinct if temperatures rise even by one or two degrees Celsius. Climate change increases the pressure on fish population. Fishes are one of the world's most valuable biological assets. Forty percent of people in the world eat fish as their main source of protein. If we fail to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, we will increase the pressure on fish. As a result, people who depend on fish will suffer from hunger and poverty.

উত্তর দেখো
A rainy day is a day when it rains continuously throughout the day. On a rainy day, the sky remains cloudy and the sun is not visible. Rain pours down heavily or gently, making the surroundings wet and gloomy. People cannot go out for their daily work easily. Most people stay at home and pass the time by reading books, watching TV, or chatting with family members. Some people enjoy eating special foods like khichuri on this day. Generally, people feel lazy and relaxed on a rainy day. However, for the poor people, a rainy day is a curse. Day laborers cannot go out to earn their living, and they have to starve with their families. The suffering of the poor knows no bounds. School-going boys and girls feel very happy on a rainy day because their schools remain closed. They pass the day by playing indoor games, telling stories, or simply enjoying the rain from their windows. A rainy day, therefore, brings joy for some and sorrow for others.

Once a hungry fox was searching for food in the forest. After a while he came to a vineyard. He was tempted by the fine bunches of ripe grapes hanging from the vines. His mouth began to water at the sight of the juicy grapes. He wanted to eat them very badly to satisfy his hunger. So, he took a run and jumped to reach the grapes. But the grapes were too high for him to reach. He tried again and again with all his might. Each time he jumped, he failed to reach the grapes. He made several attempts, but all went in vain. Finally, he became very tired and gave up his attempt. He sat down and looked at the grapes with disappointment. To console himself, he said, "The grapes are sour, and I don't want to eat them anyway." Then he walked away from the vineyard with a heavy heart.

I also want to visit my grandparents in the village and spend some time with them. Besides, I want to do some physical exercise regularly to keep myself fit.
