Unit 5, Lesson 3(A) — Greenhouse Gases

Humans can neither change the sun's radiation nor the earth's orbit around the sun. But they can control the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases and its effect on the atmosphere. Only during the last hundred years the carbon dioxide concentration has been raised alarmingly in the atmosphere and we humans can be held responsible for this. The main cause of the increase in carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels. Since the end of the 19th century, industrial activities increased rapidly giving rise to many factories. These factories required energy, which was produced through the combustion of coal. Besides coal, other sources of energy such as mineral oil and natural gas were also burned to heat our houses, run cars and airplanes or to produce electricity. Nowadays, about 85 million barrels of crude oil are burned daily. Every time a fossil raw material is burned, it releases carbon dioxide into the air. Therefore, it is clear that more and more greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are being generated worldwide by humans. Moreover, we are also strengthening the greenhouse effect by deforestation, which means cutting down trees. Every year enormous areas of forests are destroyed by people to obtain wood and to clear regions for mining and to create pasture. This loss of the forest causes dual problems. Trees that are burned up release large volumes of carbon dioxide gas into the air. On the other hand, as forests absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the air and deliver oxygen instead, we also destroy an important storehouse of carbon dioxide when we clear forests.

2. Answer the following questions in your own words2 × 5 = 10

Answer from the passage above (Greenhouse Gases). Write 1–2 sentences for each.

  1. (a) What are the prime sources of energy according to the text?
  2. (b) 'Humans can neither change the sun's radiation nor the earth's orbit around the sun.' ⎯⎯ why?
  3. (c) How can man be held responsible for greenhouse effect?
  4. (d) What are the consequences of deforestation?
  5. (e) What sould we do to keep the atmosphere normal for our healthy living?
উত্তর দেখো
  1. (a) According to the text, the prime sources of energy are fossil fuels such as coal, mineral oil, and natural gas. These are burned to produce energy for factories, to heat houses, run cars and airplanes, and to produce electricity.
  2. (b) Humans cannot change the sun's radiation or the earth's orbit because these are natural phenomena controlled by nature. These are beyond human control. However, humans can control the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases and its effect on the atmosphere.
  3. (c) Man can be held responsible for the greenhouse effect because the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas releases carbon dioxide into the air. Moreover, deforestation by humans destroys trees that absorb carbon dioxide, thus strengthening the greenhouse effect.
  4. (d) The consequences of deforestation are dual problems. First, trees that are burned up release large volumes of carbon dioxide gas into the air. Second, as forests absorb carbon dioxide and deliver oxygen, destroying them means destroying an important storehouse of carbon dioxide, which strengthens the greenhouse effect.
  5. (e) To keep the atmosphere normal for healthy living, we should reduce the burning of fossil fuels and stop deforestation. We should plant more trees to absorb carbon dioxide from the air. We should also use renewable energy sources instead of fossil fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Unit 12, Lesson 1(B) — Pull of Roots

Everyone wants to share his/her happiness with near and dear ones. That's why people rush for their homes despite serious hazards. This is called the pull of roots. Do human beings have roots like the trees? The answer is 'yes' though invisible, they lie in our minds. It's the roots that make a bond between us and family members, in-laws, friends, neighbours or even between us and the land where we were born and grew up. Wherever we stay, we have a continuous pull of our roots. It's our roots that develop our identity, making us what we are. When we lose our bond, we become rootless. Without roots we are non-entity. Such persons are devoid of values, humanity and social responsibilities. They don't know where they are from and where they are heading towards. This often makes them feel empty and lost.

Type one word in each gap.

By nature, human beings love (a) ____ to share their feeling with near and dear ones. This invisible (b) ____ for each other lies in our hearts. It always pulls us to (c) ____ back to our roots. It develops our identity and (d) ____ us to know who we are. If we deny our roots, we will deny our existence. So, we can't but (e) ____ our roots.

8. Write a paragraph on 'Tree Plantation'10

Answer the following questions: (a) What is Tree Plantation? (b) Why should we plant trees? (c) When and where should we plant tree? (d) How should we take care of it? (e) What should government do it this regard?

উত্তর দেখো
Tree plantation means planting trees in large numbers. Trees are very important for our survival. They give us food, wood, shelter, and oxygen. They protect the soil from erosion and help maintain the ecological balance. We should plant trees because trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen, which is essential for our survival. Trees also provide us with fruits, medicines, and timber. They prevent natural disasters like floods, cyclones, and droughts. We should plant trees during the rainy season, especially in June and July, because the soil is moist and suitable for the growth of trees. We can plant trees on both sides of roads, in vacant lands, on hills, and around our houses and schools. After planting trees, we should take proper care of them. We should water them regularly and protect them from animals and insects. The government should take initiatives to promote tree plantation across the country. Mass awareness should be created about the importance of trees. The government should also distribute saplings free of cost to encourage people to plant more trees.

Dear Rina,

I hope you are doing well in England. I received your letter yesterday and came to know that you want to know about my last summer vacation. I am very happy to share my experiences with you.

This year, I spent my summer vacation in our village home. I went there with my parents. The natural beauty of the village was really amazing. I enjoyed the fresh air, green fields, and clear rivers. I also visited my grandparents and spent a lot of time with them. During the vacation, I read some storybooks and learned some new things. I also helped my grandparents in their garden. In the evenings, I played with my cousins and friends in the open fields. We also visited a nearby historical place, which was very educational. The most exciting part was eating fresh fruits from the orchard. It was truly a memorable vacation.

I wish you could have been here with me. How was your summer in England? Please write back to me soon.

Your loving cousin,
Rahim
