Unit 9, Lesson 3 — Global Warming & Lifestyle
It is easy to understand now that the global warming and climate change are caused by humans on earth. If we make least use of energy, the earth will be least polluted. The golden rule is, 'Avoid machines as much as possible'. If your family has a car, use it less and walk to the shops. Walking and running are much more fun than sitting in a car. You may use bicycles too. You can save energy by changing your lifestyle. For example, you can often avoid the air-conditioning in summer and use hand fans instead. You can also use solar energy. It is free and more environment friendly. You can use energy-saving bulbs in your room. If you make a garden, you can grow much of your own food. Did you know that if you eat fewer meat and dairy products, you can reduce greenhouse gas output? You can also save the environment by reducing, reusing and recycling the things you use. You can also save energy by turning things off when you don't use them. People often leave lights, heating, air-conditioning, computers, TVs and gas burners on when they do not use them. Thus, they waste a lot of energy. Turning them off saves money too! So, you can tackle climate change and live comfortably. There is plenty you can do. Sheikh Saadi was a great poet in Iran. He used to lead a very simple life. Once on his way to the court of the king of Iran he took shelter in a nobleman's house for a night. He was then in very simple dress. The nobleman could not recognize him and his men showed disrespect and dishonour towards him. They gave him a poor seat and did not offer him proper food.
The next day, Saadi reached the court, where the king honoured him with costly robes. On his way home he again stopped at the same house, now dressed in fine clothes. This time the nobleman welcomed him warmly, seated him in the place of honour and served him the best dishes.
When the food was served, Saadi began to put it into the pockets and sleeves of his robe. Surprised, the host asked why he was doing this. Saadi replied, "Last time I came in simple clothes and you neglected me. Today I am the same man, only my dress has changed. So this food belongs to my dress, not to me." The nobleman was ashamed and begged his pardon.
